Its name, derived from the Ainu language spoken by indigenous peoples of Hokkaido, roughly translates to "long-armed kamuy" or "long-armed god," emphasizing its formidable appearance.

Sailors and fishermen who ventured into its territory risked becoming entangled in its massive arms or dragged beneath the waves by its powerful suction.
