According to Japanese mythology, Yamata no Orochi was an eight-headed and eight-tailed dragon that terrorized the land, demanding sacrifices, including maidens. Susano-o, the storm god and younger brother of the sun goddess Amaterasu, encountered the dragon during his travels. In the most well-known version of the story found in the Kojiki (The Records of Ancient Matters) and the Nihon Shoki (The Chronicles of Japan), Susano-o was tasked with defeating the dragon as part of his redemption for his previous misdeeds.

In this tale, Susano-o encountered an elderly couple who were grieving over the loss of their daughters to Yamata no Orochi. He agreed to help them, and together they devised a plan to defeat the dragon. They prepared eight large barrels of sake (rice wine) and placed them strategically around the dragon's lair. When Yamata no Orochi came to claim its victims, it drank the sake and became intoxicated. Susano-o then attacked and slew the weakened dragon, rescuing the daughters and bringing peace to the land.
