Story

The Matsuri Series is back! As is the case with all Hachiman pieces, the design is made with a story in mind. This time we're kicking it back off with the Koinobori Matsuri.

The Koinobori Festival (鯉のぼり), also known as "Carp Streamer Festival," is a vibrant Japanese celebration held annually in May, with its peak on Children’s Day (Kodomo no Hi) on May 5th. This festival honors the health, happiness, and future success of children, especially boys, and is marked by the display of colorful carp-shaped windsocks called koinobori fluttering in the spring breeze.

The origins of the Koinobori Festival date back to the Edo period (1603–1868). It was originally part of Tango no Sekku, a seasonal festival adopted from the Chinese calendar. Initially celebrated by the samurai class to promote the strength and growth of their sons, the tradition gradually spread to all families. The carp, or koi, symbolizes perseverance and strength in Japanese culture, inspired by a Chinese legend in which a carp swims upstream and transforms into a dragon—a metaphor for achieving greatness through effort and determination.

Koinobori are traditionally hoisted on poles outside homes, with a black carp (magoi) representing the father, a red or pink one (higoi) for the mother, and additional, smaller carp for each child. Some regions in Japan host grand displays along rivers, such as in Tatebayashi (Gunma Prefecture) and Kazo (Saitama Prefecture), where thousands of streamers create breathtaking sights.

Beyond its visual beauty, the Koinobori Festival encapsulates deep cultural values—resilience, family unity, and the celebration of youth. It continues to be a cherished tradition in modern Japan, blending folklore, seasonal change, and hope for future generations.

Gorgeous garment

Brilliant artwork print on T-shirt with a thick quality feel. Definitely order in your normal size, will come up slightly bigger but that’s its style. Extra love to the front chest design.
